A single blended whisky (rather unusual, grain and malt produced from the same distillery) produced at the Willowbank distillery, a sadly now silent distillery that was located on the South Island of New Zealand in Dunedin and closed in 1997. One of just 307 bottles.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Sweet black coffee and shellac, are followed by all manner of dark fruitiness; Blackberries lead blackcurrants, blueberry muffins, sour cherry and dried plums.  There's just a hint of salty liquorice too.

Palate

Complex with Chinese salted cherries, coffee grounds and bitter dark chocolate,  Cognac like at times.

Finish

Long, starting spicy, then drying, turning chocolatey, while leaving a fruity sweetness with a pinch of salt.

Willowbank was established in Dunedin by the Baker family, with distillation beginning in 1969 and whisky released under the Wilson’s name from 1974. It became the centre of modern New Zealand whisky for much of the late 20th century and was known under several names, including Willowbank, Wilson’s, Lammerlaw and Milford. At the time, it was also regarded as the world’s southernmost whisky distillery.
