Wakatsuru Sun Shine Extra Special Japanese Whisky (30cl) 20 Year Old
In stock
This hidden gem was distilled over 20 years ago by Wakatsuru Shozou Distillery – a long established, but not the best known Japanese distilleries. Wakatsuru Distillery obtained a license to distill whisky in 1953 and has been producing a small amount of whisky on and off since this time. Although some Ji-whisky companies would import unblended whiskies from Scotland and just blend, bottle, and sell them, this is a single malt whisky made at the company’s own distillery. As the limited 20 bottles previously released have completely sold out, on 5 April 2013, the company decided to launch the second phase of Wakatsuru Sunshine Single Malt Whisky. This is a 30cl bottling from the later batch.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep amber with copper-gold glow and a mahogany-tinged edge.
Nose
Sun-warmed and refined, the aroma unfolds with vanilla, honey and creamy oak, backed by subtle toffee. Dried fruit and citrus zest drift through a delicate spice, with almond and cedar adding structure. A faint, elegant whisper of smoke hints at complexity, elevating the bouquet to a polished, long-lived perfume.
Palate
Powerful yet refined, the palate showcases a deep oak backbone with ribbons of toffee and vanilla. Dried fruit, fig and apricot mingle with bright orange zest, while white pepper and ginger add a refined spiciness. The texture is syrupy and full, coating the tongue with a long, warming finish that hints at cocoa and fine wood.
Finish
Long, luxurious finish. Orchard fruit and citrus peel drift softly, evolving into creamy vanilla and lacquered oak. At 59% ABV, a poised warmth lingers, revealing toasted almond, delicate spice, and a final citrus-peel glow that echoes the dram’s sun-kissed character.
