Tasting Notes

Colour

From pale straw to sunlit gold, through warm amber to coppery bronze.

Nose

Wind-swept Islay coastal peat, sea spray and iodine rise in a briny, mineral bouquet. Citrus zest and a gentle vanilla-toffee sweetness weave through the smoke, while a touch of oak lends poise. The maritime air hints at a bold, lingering finish.

Palate

Briny sea air and iodine blaze across the palate, with razor-sharp peat smoke curling around mineral edges. A citrus lift and whisper of vanilla thread through the mid-palate, giving way to a bold, peppery finish—disciplined warmth, maritime tar, and a lingering saline glow.

Finish

An enduring maritime finish of sea-salt and peat smoke, carried on a briny breeze. Iodine and mineral notes linger, warmed by delicate sherry sweetness from the aged casks, then a peppery spine fades to a dry, smoky oak.

Caol Ila
(kowel-EEL-ah) Caol Ila was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson near Port Askaig on Islay’s east coast, overlooking the Sound of Islay between Islay and Jura. Its Gaelic name refers to that stretch of water, and the site was chosen with access to sea transport and a water supply from Loch nam Ban. Ownership changed early, passing to Norman Buchanan in 1854 and then to Bulloch Lade & Co in 1863.
