Bruichladdich WMD I Whisky Of Mass Distinction Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 19 Year Old · 1984 Vintage
Out of stock
Probably now the rarest and most sought after a bottle for Bruichladdich collectors is this first edition of WMD (Whisky of Mass Distinction) Big Brother of which there were only 440 bottles produced in 2003 from a combination of 60% refill bourbon barrels, 20% refill Oloroso casks, and 20% refill Fino casks.
When Inverleven distillery was dismantled some copper stills and distilling equipment travelled by boat passed Faslane (home of the UK's nuclear arsenal) and triggered the CIA to investigate Bruichladdich for producing Weapons of Mass destruction. The tongue in cheek bottling hammers its message home with a tribute to George Orwell, titled Big Brother on the back label.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Rich golden amber with coppery glints and a touch of mahogany.
Nose
Sea-salt and citrus lift mingle with creamy vanilla and toffee from the Bourbon casks. Layered in are dark fig and raisin from the Oloroso, toasted almond and walnut, with a hint of Fino brightness. Polished oak and delicate spice frame a refined, coastal aroma that hints at Bruichladdich’s maritime heritage.
Palate
Silky and multi-layered on the palate, this 19-year Bruichladdich pours vanilla-rich cream from the bourbon casks, layered with dark-fruit depth and nutty sherry from the Oloroso. A crisp, dry lift from the Fino keeps it exhilarating, as notes of toffee, raisin and almond mingle with coastal salt and oak spice, finishing long with balanced sweetness and a refined maritime edge.
Finish
Long, graceful finish with sea-salt brightness, vanilla and toffee from the bourbon influence, and a layer of dried fruit from the sherry casks. Nutty, subtly zesty, and polished by oak spice, the sweetness gradually yields to a refined, lingering warmth.
