That unusually drawn-out story is part of what makes it distinctive, as does its connection to the earlier Drumguish distillery, which operated nearby from 1895 to 1911.
What set Speyside Distillery apart was its deliberately small scale and a house style built around elegance rather than weight, released through labels such as SPEY and Beinn Dubh. In more recent years it also became known for its strong presence in export markets, particularly Taiwan, after Harvey’s of Edinburgh took ownership in 2012. The distillery’s story took another notable turn in 2025, when production at the original site came to an end, making existing stocks especially interesting as part of a short and rather unusual chapter in modern Scotch whisky.
