About Pittyvaich (silent)
(PIT-ee-vakh) Pittyvaich was built in Dufftown by Arthur Bell & Sons in 1974, with production starting in 1975 beside the company’s Dufftown distillery. It was created to supply malt whisky for Bell’s blends rather than to build a major single malt identity of its own, which makes its story quite different from many older Speyside names. That blend-led purpose also explains why Pittyvaich remained relatively obscure during its short life, despite being one of the youngest distilleries in Speyside at the time.
Its history was brief but memorable. Pittyvaich released a 12 Year Old under Diageo’s Flora & Fauna range in 1991, closed in 1993 after only 18 years of production, and was demolished in 2002. Because so little official whisky was released, most drinkers know Pittyvaich through occasional independent bottlings and later special releases, which has helped give it a stronger following as a lost distillery than it ever had while it was operating.
