The distillery is especially associated with a lightly peated, subtly smoky style rather than the heavier peat often linked with Islay. Highland Park also makes particular note of its use of Orkney heathered peat, which helps give the whisky a softer, more aromatic smoke. The range is often built around sherry-seasoned oak and bourbon casks, which suits the house style well, bringing together honeyed sweetness, dried fruit, spice and gentle smoke in a way that feels balanced rather than overly heavy.
Highland Park has been part of Edrington since 1999, and in recent years the brand has put even more emphasis on its Orkney identity in both its whisky and presentation. That connection to place is still the clearest thread running through the distillery today.
