About Glenrothes
(Glen-ROTH-ess) The Glenrothes is one of Speyside’s classic distilleries, with a history stretching back to 1879. Built in the town of Rothes, it was founded with the aim of producing a lighter, more elegant style of malt, and that bright, fruity character still sits at the heart of the whisky today.
Established in 1879 beside the Burn of Rothes, The Glenrothes builds its reputation on slow distillation in tall lantern-shaped stills and near-exclusive maturation in first-fill oloroso-seasoned casks sourced through owner Edrington’s long partnership with Jerez. The result is a weighty yet refined spirit layered with Seville orange, honeycomb and baking spice – a style prized by blenders (notably Cutty Sark and The Macallan) and increasingly by single-malt enthusiasts.
The modern range centres on the Soleo Collection, named after the sun-drying process for sherry grapes: bright, bourbon-accented 10 Year (travel retail); citrus-toffee 12 Year; cask-strength Whisky Maker’s Cut; complex 18 Year with dried-fruit richness; and the decadent 25 Year, crowned “Best Speyside” at the World Whiskies Awards. Prestige releases such as the 30 Year and limited 40 Year showcase tropical fruit, dark chocolate and polished oak, while the famed Vintage Series (1970s through 2000s) bottles whisky from a single harvest year, each expression individually aged to peak character rather than a fixed age. Distillery-exclusive hand-filled single casks, Warehouse No. 1 selections and travel-retail rarities (Whisky Maker’s Limited Release, Bourbon Cask Reserve) provide rich hunting ground for collectors.
