A Bit of History
Founded in 1898, Benromach has experienced one of the most turbulent histories in Scotch whisky. The distillery opened during a difficult economic period for the whisky industry, and faced multiple closures throughout the 20th century. Everything changed in 1993 when independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail acquired the distillery. The family-owned company spent years restoring the site before officially reopening Benromach in 1998, with then Prince Charles attending the ceremony.
Rather than chasing modern trends, Gordon & MacPhail focused on reviving a forgotten Speyside whisky style, one that historically carried gentle peat smoke and richer flavours. This vision continues to define Benromach today.
A Unique Whisky
Several factors contribute to Benromach Distillery’s distinctive flavour profile. The use of lightly peated barley creates a gentle smoky character that sets it apart from many other Speyside whiskies, while long fermentation times help develop fruity and complex flavours within the spirit. The majority of the whisky is matured in first-fill bourbon and sherry casks, adding layers of richness, sweetness and depth. Traditional worm tub condensers also play an important role by producing a heavier, fuller-bodied spirit style, and the distillery’s small-batch production methods help maintain both consistency and unique character in every release.

Award Winning Single Malts
The multi-award winning Benromach core range showcases the distillery’s traditional Speyside character, combining rich fruit flavours, subtle peat smoke, and sherry influence across a variety of age statements. The Benromach 10 Year Old is the flagship expression, offering notes of orchard fruit, malt, gentle smoke, and spice, making it an approachable introduction to the distillery’s style. The Benromach 15 Year Old delivers a richer and more complex profile with dark chocolate, stewed fruit, oak spice, and a deeper smoky character. For those seeking a more refined and mature dram, the Benromach 21 Year Old offers layers of fruitcake, soft smoke, toasted oak, and sherry sweetness with exceptional balance and depth.
Experimental and Limited Releases
Benromach has also gained attention for its innovative “Contrasts” series and cask strength releases. These whiskies allow the distillery to experiment with barley varieties, peat levels, and cask maturation styles while still preserving the distillery’s core character.
The distillery’s high aged releases have also attracted global acclaim. In 2022, the Benromach 40 Year Old was named “Best in Show” at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
As whisky enthusiasts increasingly seek authenticity, transparency, and traditional production methods, Benromach has become one of Scotland’s most respected independent distilleries. Its whiskies appeal to both newcomers and experienced whisky drinkers because they combine accessibility with genuine complexity. The subtle peat smoke, rich sherry influence, and old-fashioned production style create a profile rarely found in modern Speyside whisky.
