Benriach Shades of Smoke Edition No. 1 is a remarkable 31 Year Old Speyside single malt created by Master Blender Rachel Barrie from smoky spirit distilled in the spring and summer of 1994. Drawn from a combination of bourbon, Pedro Ximénez sherry, Oloroso sherry, Marsala and virgin oak casks, this limited-edition release explores the softer, sweeter side of Benriach's historic peated whisky style. Bottled at 48.1% ABV, it marks the first expression in the distillery's Shades of Smoke collection and is presented with distinctive generative artwork created by artist Stefano Contiero.
Complex and beautifully layered, Shades of Smoke opens with vibrant yuzu, forest honey and gentle juniper smoke, followed by dark chocolate, floral hibiscus and rich spiced orange caramel. The palate develops with smoked wild honey and charred mandarin before lemon, ginger, ripe peach and cooling wintergreen emerge towards the finish. More elegant than heavily peated, the whisky balances mature fruit and sweetness with a refined thread of Speyside smoke that lingers throughout.
