J.W. Dant Special Reserve is a Kentucky straight bourbon from Heaven Hill, produced using a traditional sour mash recipe and aged in charred American oak barrels. Named after 19th-century distiller Joseph Washington Dant, the brand reflects one of Kentucky’s long-standing bourbon legacies.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Vanilla bean and caramel dominate, joined by brown sugar and melted toffee. Toasted oak lends structure, while wisps of maple and spice—cinnamon and nutmeg—add warmth, with a faint note of dried fruit from the aging.

Palate

Silky and approachable, this bourbon delivers warm vanilla and caramel upfront, with hints of toffee and honey. Mid-palate brings toasted oak and gentle baking spices, a touch of rye-like bite, then a long, creamy finish of vanilla, caramel and oak with soft, lingering spice.

Heaven Hill was founded in 1935 in Bardstown, Kentucky by the five Shapira brothers, and remains one of the few major American whiskey houses still family owned. The company’s history includes one of the most significant setbacks in modern bourbon: the 1996 fire that destroyed the original Bardstown distillery and seven warehouses, with more than 90,000 barrels lost. Heaven Hill later bought the Bernheim Distillery in 1999, moving distilling operations to Louisville, and in 2025 it returned to Bardstown distilling with the opening of the new Heaven Hill Springs Distillery.
