About Whyte & Mackay
Whyte & Mackay was founded in Glasgow in 1844 by James Whyte and Charles Mackay. The business grew out of the city’s 19th-century trading and shipbuilding economy, and the original blend was positioned as an alternative to Cognac for Glasgow drinkers. Whyte & Mackay is still closely tied to Glasgow today, with the company remaining headquartered there.
A defining part of Whyte & Mackay is its triple maturation process. The malt whisky and grain whisky are matured separately, then married together in sherry casks, a production detail that has long sat at the centre of the blend’s identity.
Whyte & Mackay now sits within a wider Scotch whisky business that operates five distilleries in Scotland: Invergordon, The Dalmore, Jura, Fettercairn and Tamnavulin. Whyte and Mackay Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Emperador UK Limited, with Alliance Global Group as its ultimate parent company.
