About Royal Lochnagar
(Loch-na-Gar) Royal Lochnagar was founded by John Begg in 1845 beside the River Dee, close to Balmoral in Royal Deeside. Earlier distilleries using the Lochnagar name had operated nearby, but Begg’s New Lochnagar is the site that developed into the distillery still working today.
Its royal connection began in 1848, when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited from Balmoral. The distillery was granted the right to use the Royal Lochnagar name soon afterwards, making its location and royal association central parts of its history.
Now part of Diageo, Royal Lochnagar remains one of the company’s smaller malt whisky distilleries. Production keeps a traditional Highland character, with a delicate, gently fruity and lightly woody style shown most clearly in Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old, while occasional limited releases have given the distillery more visibility beyond its core expression.
