About Mosstowie (Silent)
Mosstowie was a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky produced at Miltonduff Distillery between 1964 and 1981. It was not a separate distillery, but a distinct malt made on Lomond stills installed by Hiram Walker, then owner of Miltonduff and Ballantine’s, to create a different style of spirit for blending.
The Lomond stills used rectifying plates in the neck, allowing greater control over reflux and spirit character than a standard pot still. Mosstowie was used mainly for Ballantine’s blends and was never developed as a regular official single malt, so surviving bottles now come mostly from rare independent bottlings. The style is generally lighter than standard Miltonduff, with malt, grassiness, gentle spice, soft fruit and occasional light smoky notes.
