Glenugie later became closely linked to blended Scotch, particularly Long John, before closing permanently in 1983 during the wider whisky downturn. The buildings were sold off after closure and the distillery is now demolished, with the Glenugie name owned by Chivas Brothers. Official bottlings are very limited, so most surviving Glenugie whisky is found through older independent releases, often showing a coastal Highland style with malt, fruit, light waxiness, herbs, oak and occasional sherry-cask richness.
