About Glencadam
(glen-CADAM) Glencadam was founded in 1825 by George Cooper in Brechin, making it one of the older Highland distilleries still in operation. Its history includes a long period under blending companies rather than as a major single malt name in its own right, with ownership later passing through Hiram Walker and Allied Domecq before the distillery was mothballed in 2000. A new chapter began in 2003, when Angus Dundee Distillers acquired and reopened the site, with the first new production run under its ownership taking place that August.
Glencadam has since been developed more clearly as a single malt brand, with its own range launching in 2008. The whisky is generally associated with a light, fruity Highland style, and official bottlings have been presented without chill filtration or added caramel colouring. More recent milestones include the reinstatement of the distillery’s water wheel in 2021, a small but fitting detail for a distillery that still leans heavily on its 19th-century identity.
