About Big Peat
Big Peat was introduced by Douglas Laing in 2009 as an Islay blended malt, bringing together single malt whiskies from the island rather than using grain whisky. It forms part of Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts range, which presents regional Scotch whisky styles through blended malt bottlings. The core Big Peat recipe includes Islay malts such as Caol Ila, Bowmore, Ardbeg and Port Ellen, with each contributing sweetness, balance, medicinal peat and mature depth respectively.
The whisky is bottled without chill filtration or added colouring, with the standard expression sitting at 46% ABV. Its style is firmly Islay-led, built around smoke, ash, tar, sea air, coastal salinity and phenolic peat, balanced by sweeter malt and fruitier notes. The range has since expanded with Christmas Editions, Fèis Ìle releases, aged bottlings and cask-finished limited editions, while keeping the focus on smoky Islay malt whisky.
