Michter’s 10 Year Old Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey is one of the distillery’s most limited and highly sought-after releases. Distilled and bottled in Kentucky, this mature American rye whiskey has spent at least ten years developing in a single fire-charred new American white oak barrel before being bottled at 46.4% ABV. Each bottle represents the individual character of one carefully selected cask rather than a blend of multiple barrels.

The expression forms part of Michter’s prestigious Limited Production range, for which only barrels displaying the required maturity, balance and elegance are selected. Although it carries a 10-year age statement, Michter’s allows its whiskey to mature according to flavour rather than bottling every barrel as soon as it reaches the stated age. This patient approach creates a refined rye in which mature oak and warming spice remain balanced by rich sweetness and fresh citrus.

Michter’s production methods include filling barrels at a relatively low 103 proof and using heat-cycled warehouses during maturation. The lower entry strength promotes greater interaction between the whiskey and the concentrated sugars within the oak, while controlled temperature changes encourage the spirit to move repeatedly into and out of the barrel staves. Together with more than a decade of maturation, these methods build a rich texture and considerable depth without allowing the oak to overwhelm the rye’s character.

The nose opens with deep vanilla, buttery toffee and toasted almonds, followed by cinnamon, cracked pepper and a lift of orange citrus. The palate is smooth and full-bodied, bringing together caramelised sweetness, roasted nuts and mature American oak before the rye spice grows increasingly prominent. A long, warming finish leaves lingering vanilla, cinnamon, black pepper and bright citrus.

Produced in limited quantities and presented at an approachable yet flavourful 46.4% ABV, Michter’s 10 Year Old Single Barrel Rye is particularly well suited to drinking neat.
