About North Port (silent)
(North-Port) North Port was a Highland single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Brechin, Angus, founded in 1820 by brothers David, John and Alexander Guthrie. It was originally called Townhead, later became Brechin, and took the North Port name in 1839, after the old northern gate of the walled town of Brechin. The nearby Glencadam Distillery, founded in 1825, is now the only surviving whisky distillery in the town.
North Port closed permanently in 1983 during the wider Scotch whisky downturn and the site was demolished in 1994. Most of its production went into blends, so official single malt bottlings are scarce, with later releases appearing through Diageo’s Rare Malts series and the 2005 Special Releases under the Brechin name. Surviving North Port whisky is now limited, with a style often described as dry, fruity, lightly herbal and gently malty.
