About Knockando
(NOCH-an-doe) Knockando is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Moray, close to the River Spey. Founded in 1898 by John Tytler Thomson, it takes its name from the nearby village of Knockando, with the name commonly linked to the Gaelic Cnoc Cheannachd, meaning “Hill of Commerce”.
The distillery was acquired by W. & A. Gilbey in 1904 and later became part of International Distillers & Vintners, Grand Metropolitan and then Diageo. Knockando has long been used for blending as well as single malt, with J&B one of the best-known blends associated with its spirit.
Knockando single malt is usually presented with a vintage statement rather than only an age statement, giving the whisky a slightly different identity within Speyside. The style is typically gentle, nutty and fruity, with orchard fruit, malt, almond, light spice and soft oak, often shaped by maturation in American oak bourbon casks and European oak sherry casks.
