Johnnie Walker has unveiled one of its most significant luxury whisky releases of 2026, introducing Johnnie Walker Vault, a new permanent prestige blended Scotch whisky created by Master Blender Dr Emma Walker. At the heart of the release is an extraordinary combination of two generations of whisky from Brora Distillery: highly aged single malt distilled before its closure in 1983 and younger whisky produced following the Highland distillery's reopening in 2021.
Launched on 14 October 2026, Johnnie Walker Vault brings together some of Scotland's rarest surviving whiskies alongside contemporary single malts, including spirit never previously used in a Johnnie Walker blend. Bottled at 43.8% ABV in a distinctive 70cl architectural decanter, the expression carries a recommended UK retail price of £1,100. It represents the first permanent prestige whisky to emerge from the Johnnie Walker Vault collection, previously associated with bespoke blends and exclusive collaborations.

Johnnie Walker Vault – A New Luxury Scotch Whisky for 2026
The Johnnie Walker Vault was introduced in March 2025 as an exclusive blending platform dedicated to exceptionally rare and historic Scotch whiskies.
Located beneath the Johnnie Walker Experience on Princes Street in Edinburgh, the Vault contains a rotating collection of approximately 500 carefully selected whiskies. These are drawn from Diageo's extensive reserves, including rare aged casks, surviving stocks from closed distilleries and experimental single malts.
Dr Emma Walker oversees the collection, drawing upon an extraordinary inventory of more than 10 million casks across Scotland.
Until now, the Vault has primarily been associated with individually commissioned whiskies and highly exclusive releases, including the Johnnie Walker Vault Couture Blend created in collaboration with French fashion designer Olivier Rousteing.
The arrival of Johnnie Walker Vault as a permanent expression introduces a different approach. Rather than a one-off collaboration or individually numbered limited edition, the whisky becomes a continuing part of the brand's prestige portfolio, although its distribution remains highly selective.
Two Generations of Brora Whisky in One Blend
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Johnnie Walker Vault is the inclusion of whisky from two entirely different periods in the history of Brora Distillery.
Located in the northern Highlands of Scotland, Brora has become one of the country's most highly regarded single malt distilleries.
Originally operating as Clynelish, the historic distillery became known as Brora in 1969, following the construction of a neighbouring modern Clynelish distillery.
During the early 1970s, Brora produced heavily peated whisky to help meet demand for smoky malt destined for blending. Production subsequently shifted towards a generally lighter Highland character, although the distillery retained its distinctive combination of waxy texture, fruit, mineral qualities and restrained smoke.
Brora ceased production in 1983, becoming one of Scotland's celebrated lost distilleries.
For almost four decades, enthusiasts could only experience Brora through surviving whisky distilled before its closure. As remaining stocks became increasingly scarce, historic bottlings developed an exceptional reputation among collectors.
In May 2021, Brora officially resumed production following an extensive restoration project.
Johnnie Walker Vault now brings together whisky from both periods.
The first component comes from mature casks filled before the distillery closed in 1983, providing a direct connection to Brora's historic production.
The second comes from whisky distilled following the 2021 reopening, introducing the character of the restored distillery.
The combination is particularly significant because it marks the first use of newly produced Brora whisky in a Johnnie Walker blend.
Rather than attempting to recreate a historic Brora bottling, Dr Emma Walker has used both generations to establish the foundation of a new luxury blended Scotch.
The Rare Whiskies Behind Johnnie Walker Vault
Although Brora provides the central identity of the release, several other important Scottish distilleries contribute to the blend.
Port Dundas
The historic Port Dundas grain distillery in Glasgow closed in 2010, leaving behind a diminishing collection of mature grain whisky.
Within Johnnie Walker Vault, Port Dundas contributes rich caramel sweetness and a rounded texture, providing contrast to the Highland malt components.
Its inclusion also connects the release with the wider Johnnie Walker Ghost & Rare collection, which previously celebrated Port Dundas in a dedicated Blue Label expression.
Cardhu
Cardhu, located in Speyside, has played an important role in the Johnnie Walker story for generations.
Known for its approachable, fruit-forward single malt, Cardhu introduces brightness and balance, complementing the richer and more mature components.
Clynelish
Clynelish shares a particularly close historical relationship with Brora.
The neighbouring distillery produces a distinctive Highland malt recognised for its waxy texture, orchard fruit, citrus and subtle maritime influences.
An exceptional Clynelish whisky has been selected to contribute richness, texture and coastal complexity to the new Vault expression.
Together, these components allow the historic and contemporary Brora whiskies to remain central while introducing additional layers of sweetness, fruit and mature oak.
Johnnie Walker Vault 2026 Tasting Notes
According to the official tasting profile released by Johnnie Walker, the whisky combines rich confectionery sweetness with Highland fruit, floral notes, mature oak and gentle smoke.
Nose: Butterscotch, salted caramel and vanilla, followed by dried apricot, tropical fruits and Seville orange marmalade. Delicate wildflowers, fragrant barley, toasted oak and subtle bonfire smoke develop underneath.
Palate: Rich vanilla, almond and frangipane, complemented by ripe Scottish raspberries and tropical fruit sweetness. Gentle smoke, charred oak, malt, leather and tobacco contribute further depth.
Finish: Long and balanced, with lingering apricot, sweet raspberry and crème anglaise, accompanied by warming spice, integrated oak and delicate smoky notes.
The flavour profile reflects Dr Emma Walker's intention to capture elements of the Scottish landscape, combining the floral character of Highland summers with coastal smoke and the richness of exceptionally mature whisky.
An Architectural Decanter Inspired by Johnnie Walker History
The presentation of Johnnie Walker Vault is a departure from the familiar square-shouldered bottles associated with the brand's traditional range.
The whisky is housed in a striking cube-shaped glass decanter, inspired by a historic Johnnie Walker Blue Label bottle discovered within the company's archives.
Its contemporary architectural design features clean geometric lines and a sculpted golden closure.
The stopper incorporates a flowing wave motif, intended to represent the movement and precision involved in blending different whiskies into a single expression.
Selected retail locations will also offer bespoke engraving, allowing purchasers to personalise the presentation.
The design places Johnnie Walker Vault firmly within the luxury spirits category, combining historical references with contemporary craftsmanship.
How Does Johnnie Walker Vault Compare with Ghost & Rare Brora?
Johnnie Walker has previously celebrated Brora through its Blue Label Ghost & Rare collection.
Released in 2017, Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost & Rare Brora was the inaugural expression in a series dedicated to historic Scottish distilleries.
That earlier release focused on rare Brora whisky from the distillery's original production era, using carefully selected supporting whiskies to highlight its distinctive Highland character.
The new Johnnie Walker Vault takes a different approach.
Rather than concentrating exclusively on historic Brora, it combines whisky distilled before 1983 with spirit produced following the distillery's restoration.
This creates a connection between two periods of production separated by nearly four decades.
There is also an important difference in how the two whiskies are positioned.
Ghost & Rare Brora was a limited release, whereas Johnnie Walker Vault has been introduced as a permanent addition to the prestige range.
Collectors interested in the distillery's history may therefore find the two expressions particularly interesting to compare.
