About Elijah Craig
Elijah Craig bourbon takes its name from the Reverend Elijah Craig, whose distillery was founded in 1789 in what is now Georgetown, Kentucky. The brand credits him as the first distiller to age whiskey in new charred oak barrels, which is why he is still referred to in its story as the “Father of Bourbon.”
The modern Elijah Craig brand itself was first brought to market by Heaven Hill in 1986, and Heaven Hill says its master distillers were making a small-batch bourbon under the name before “small batch” had really become an industry term.
That history still shapes the range today. Elijah Craig Small Batch remains the core bottling, made from batches of 200 barrels or fewer and matured in Level 3 charred new oak, while later releases such as Barrel Proof, Toasted Barrel, Straight Rye and older age-stated bottlings have helped turn it into one of Heaven Hill’s most important whiskey families.
