About Chivas Regal
(SHIV-us ree-guhl) Chivas Regal traces its roots to Aberdeen in 1801, when John and James Chivas began building the business that would become Chivas Brothers. The name gained royal recognition in 1843 with a Royal Warrant to supply Queen Victoria, and entered whisky history in 1909 with the launch of Chivas Regal 25 Year Old, the blend that established Chivas as a luxury Scotch whisky.
Founded in 1801 as an Aberdeen grocery and wine merchant, Chivas Brothers gained a reputation for “luxury provisions” before venturing into whisky blending in the mid-19th century. The modern Chivas Regal style, established in 1909, is anchored by spirit from Strathisla Distillery – Scotland’s oldest continuously operating Highland distillery (1786). Long fermentation, copper pot distillation and ageing in high-quality American-oak and sherry casks lend Strathisla its orchard-fruit sweetness and gentle heather-honey character, which Master Blender Sandy Hyslop layers with select malts and grain whiskies to create Chivas’s renowned smoothness.
The core 40 % ABV Chivas 12 delivers crisp apple, butterscotch and vanilla, while the Extra 13 Collection explores bold finishing casks such as Oloroso sherry, Tequila, Rum or Rye for region-specific nuance. Chivas Regal Mizunara introduces rare Japanese oak for delicate coconut spice, and the 18 Year adds creamy dark chocolate and dried fruit complexity. Ultis – the house’s first blended malt – combines five key Speyside malts for deep, spicy elegance, whereas the opulent 25 Year revives the original 1909 luxury release with layers of rich raisin, orange and soft smoke. Above these sits the Royal Salute range, conceived for Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation and bottled at 21, 25, 30 and 38 years, often in hand-crafted porcelain flagons or bespoke crystal decanters. Limited editions such as “The Icon,” “The Edge of Scotland,” travel-retail exclusives and artist collaborations (e.g., Balmain x Chivas) provide sought-after collectible options for enthusiasts.
