Noval’s reputation was firmly established by the declaration of its 1931 Vintage Port and 1931 Nacional Vintage Port, a moment the house itself points to as the one that secured its standing in the English and American markets. Since 1993, Quinta do Noval has been part of AXA Millésimes.
Its most famous claim to distinction is Nacional, the small parcel of ungrafted vines that survived phylloxera and became one of Port’s most celebrated wines. Quinta do Noval is also credited with introducing Late Bottled Vintage Port in 1958 and being the first to release blended tawnies with an age indication, both of which became important parts of the wider Port category. Another significant milestone came in 1997, when Noval became the first traditional Port shipper to centralise all its activities in the Douro Valley rather than keeping part of the operation in Vila Nova de Gaia, and since 2004 it has also produced Douro wines alongside its Ports.
