About Crown Royal
Crown Royal was created in 1939 to mark the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Canada. Seagram developed the whisky after hundreds of trial blends, presenting it in a cut-glass decanter with the purple velvet bag that is still closely associated with the brand today. It went on to become one of the most recognisable names in Canadian whisky.
Created in 1939 to mark the first Canadian tour of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Crown Royal has grown into a global icon of smooth, easy-drinking whisky. Production takes place at the lakeside Gimli Distillery, where locally grown grain is distilled into more than fifty individual whisky styles. These spirits mature separately in charred American oak warehouses cooled by breezes from Lake Winnipeg and are later married by the distillery’s master blender using limestone-filtered water. The result is the gentle Canadian style for which Crown Royal is famous: creamy vanilla sweetness, soft fruit and subtle rye spice delivered with exceptional balance.
While the classic Deluxe blend remains the flagship, the range now showcases impressive variety. Northern Harvest Rye became the first Canadian whisky named World Whisky of the Year in 2016; Crown Royal Black offers richer oak and dark fruit; XO is finished in Cognac casks for plush dried-fruit depth, and XR (“Extra Rare”) draws on some of the final casks from the closed LaSalle distillery.
