Suntory Whisky, the iconic Japanese whisky brand, will celebrate its 100th anniversary of whisky making this year.
Founded by Shinjiro Torri in 1899, Suntory began distilling whisky in 1923. They have gone on to become a household name in the Whisky industry, known for their commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and innovation.
In this blog, we will explore the history and legacy of Suntory Whisky and its journey to becoming one of the most respected and sought-after whisky brands in the world.
The Beginnings Of Suntory
Shinjiro Torii was a visionary entrepreneur who had a passion for creating the finest quality whisky. In the early 1900s, he started a small store in Osaka, selling imported wines and spirits. However, he was not satisfied with the quality of the products he was selling, and he dreamed of creating his own brand of whisky that would rival the best in the world.
In 1923, Torii fulfilled his dream and established the first distillery in Japan, called Yamazaki. He chose the location for its pure water source and ideal climate conditions for whisky making. He also hired a distiller named Masataka Taketsuru, who would later go on to establish his own whisky brand, Nikka Whisky.
The Birth of Suntory Whisky
In 1929, Torii launched his first whisky under the name "Suntory Whisky Shirofuda," which was a blended malt whisky. The brand quickly gained popularity in Japan, and in 1934, Torii launched his first single malt whisky, called Yamazaki. This whisky was made exclusively from Japanese ingredients and was aged in Japanese oak casks, giving it a unique flavour profile that set it apart from other whiskies.
Over the years, Suntory continued to innovate and create new blends and expressions of whisky. In 1937, the brand introduced the first blended whisky made entirely from Japanese ingredients, called Kakubin. This whisky was an instant hit and became a symbol of Japanese whisky-making excellence.
Suntory Whisky Today
Today, Suntory operates three distilleries across Japan. Yamazaki is Suntory’s flagship single malt, produced at Japan’s first and oldest whisky distillery. Suntory’s second malt whisky distillery, Hakushu, was founded in 1973, on the forest slopes beneath Mount Kaikoma. Chita distillery, in central Japan, produces high quality grain whisky that is a vital component of Suntory’s famous blended whiskies, including Hibiki.
The producer’s enduring commitment to quality and craftsmanship has earned it numerous awards and accolades.
Whisky from Suntory is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Thanks to this success, the Japanese whisky industry as a whole has been brought to the forefront of the whisky world. Japan’s whisky is now considered among the finest globally, with Suntory consistently leading the way.
