Marquis de Montesquiou Bas Armagnac 1942 Vintage
In stock
Distilled in 1942 and bottled at 46% ABV, this Marquis de Montesquiou Bas Armagnac is a remarkable survivor from the heart of Gascony. Produced by one of Armagnac’s most respected houses, it reflects the finesse and longevity for which the Bas Armagnac region is renowned. Crafted during the Second World War, it stands today as both a rare historical artefact and a powerful expression of traditional French distillation.
Extended ageing in French oak has given the spirit a deep mahogany colour with amber and copper tones. Aromatically, it is richly layered, opening with dried apricot, prune and fig, followed by vanilla, cocoa and mature oak. With time, notes of tobacco, leather, roasted nuts and gentle sweet spice emerge, alongside a subtle rancio character that adds depth and poise.
The palate is intense yet beautifully composed. Dried fruits, toffee and caramelised orange peel lead into savoury nuances of walnut, cigar box and earthy undertones. Long maturation has created a smooth, rounded texture, while the higher strength delivers warmth and structure without overpowering the balance. The finish is long and resonant, lingering with spice, chocolate and softened oak.
Best enjoyed neat and unhurried, this is an Armagnac suited to quiet contemplation and significant moments. Rare, deeply expressive and steeped in history, the 1942 Marquis de Montesquiou Bas Armagnac offers a singular glimpse into the enduring heritage of one of France’s great spirits traditions.
