About William Grant's
William Grant & Sons was founded in Dufftown in 1887, when William Grant and his family built Glenfiddich distillery by hand. The first spirit ran on Christmas Day 1887, The Balvenie followed in 1892, and Grant’s blended Scotch was introduced in 1898, giving the business an early foothold in both single malt and blended whisky.
The company has remained family owned since the beginning, which is unusual for a spirits business of its size. William Grant’s son-in-law, Charles Gordon, became the company’s first salesman and helped expand exports in the early 20th century, and the family is still involved today, with fifth-generation family member Glenn Gordon serving as chairman.
William Grant & Sons grew well beyond Dufftown over the following decades, including the opening of Girvan Distillery in 1963 and the later launch or development of brands such as Hendrick’s, Monkey Shoulder and Tullamore D.E.W. Today the group’s portfolio includes Glenfiddich, The Balvenie, Grant’s, Hendrick’s, Monkey Shoulder, Tullamore D.E.W., Drambuie, Milagro, Reyka and The Famous Grouse, with production sites in the UK, Ireland, the US, India and Mexico.
