About Pappy Van Winkle
Pappy Van Winkle takes its name from Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr., whose bourbon story began in the late 19th century with W.L. Weller & Sons in Louisville. He later partnered in the creation of Stitzel-Weller Distillery in 1935, helping establish the wheated bourbon style that still defines the Van Winkle range. The family’s modern chapter took another important turn in 2002, when Old Rip Van Winkle entered its long-running partnership with Buffalo Trace, where the Van Winkle bourbons have since been produced to the family’s recipe.
The best-known releases are the 15, 20 and 23 Year Old Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve bottlings, supported by Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year Old, Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year Old and the Family Reserve Rye. Over time, the Van Winkle name has become one of the most sought-after in American whiskey, with scarcity, long ageing and the legacy of the original Stitzel-Weller style all contributing to its reputation.
