About Ballantines
(BAL-un-tynes) Ballantine’s traces its roots to 1827, when George Ballantine opened a grocery shop in Edinburgh before moving into wines and spirits in 1836. The business expanded steadily, exporting worldwide by 1881, and in 1895 George Ballantine & Son received a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria. Ballantine’s Finest followed in 1910, giving the brand the blend that still sits at the centre of the range today.
Blending has always been at the heart of Ballantine’s, and the house notes that only five Master Blenders have overseen the whisky since its beginnings. George Robertson joined in 1937 and created Ballantine’s 17 Year Old, described by the brand as the world’s first 17-year-old Scotch, later followed by Ballantine’s 30 Year Old. Today the range runs from Finest through to older expressions such as 17 and 30 Year Old, with Ballantine’s remaining part of Chivas Brothers.
