Hine traces its roots to 1763 in Jarnac on the Charente, making it one of the older houses in Cognac. Its defining figure arrived later, when Thomas Hine, an Englishman from Dorset, came to France in 1791 during the Revolution, married into the business, and the house eventually took his name in 1817.
