Black Shuck Gin is strong and yet smooth, traditional and yet contemporary, complex and yet balanced. It has lightly floral notes from the Norfolk lavender followed by warm sweet fruity tones from the Sea Buckthorn and Bitter Orange Peel
Black Shuck White Label Gin is Norfolk distillery’s signature Gin. It has been distilled traditionally with 11 botanicals using the London Dry method since it’s launch in 2015. The two signature botanicals are Norfolk Lavender and Sea Buckthorn.
The Sea Buckthorn adds a fresh, tart, burnt orange note to the Gin which is balanced with the ever present Juniper and the soft, sweet, floral notes of the Norfolk Lavender.
Norfolk Lavender comes from England’s premier Lavender Farm, founded in 1932 with almost 100 acres of lavender under cultivation. Sea Buckthorn is a prickly shrub which enjoys sandy soil. Hence it can be found along the North Norfolk coast along with the legendary Black Shuck. The bright golden orange berries are classified as a super fruit. Sea Buckthorn is possibly the ultimate super fruit bursting with vitamins and minerals. Each berry contains up to 15 times more Vitamin C than you will find in one orange.
The latin name for Sea Buckthorn is Hippophae Rhamnoides. According to Greek legend a group of soldiers had allowed their war-ragged horses to roam free to die a natural death. Imagine their astonishment when the horses returned some time later full of health and vigour and with shiny coats. The horses had been grazing in forests of Sea Buckthorn, Hippophae Rhamnoides, which loosely translates to ‘tree that makes horses hair shine’. It is hardly surprising therefore to read that according to folklore the Sea Buckthorn was the favourite food of Pegasus, the mythological winged horse who carried thunderbolts for Zeus.
