Jack Daniel’s is one of the most famous names in American whiskey, made in Lynchburg, Tennessee, at a distillery first registered in 1866. Founded by Jasper “Jack” Daniel, it is widely recognised as America’s first registered distillery and remains closely linked to Cave Spring Hollow, the natural limestone spring that provides the iron-free water used in production. The distillery’s early history is also tied to Nathan “Nearest” Green, the skilled distiller who taught Jack Daniel and became the first master distiller at Jack Daniel’s.
The key difference between Jack Daniel’s and bourbon is the Tennessee whiskey process. Jack Daniel’s uses a mash bill of corn, rye and malted barley, but before maturation the spirit is mellowed through sugar maple charcoal in what is known as the Lincoln County Process. This charcoal mellowing helps create the smooth, rounded style Jack Daniel’s is known for, with classic notes of vanilla, caramel, toasted oak, gentle spice and soft sweetness.
Old No. 7 remains the signature bottle in the range, with its black label, square bottle and familiar Tennessee Whiskey character making it one of the best-known whiskey bottles in the world. It is easy to enjoy neat, over ice or with cola, and also works well in serves such as a Whiskey Sour, Old Fashioned or Lynchburg Lemonade. The mystery behind the “Old No. 7” name has never been fully confirmed, adding another piece of history to the bottle.
The wider Jack Daniel’s range gives customers plenty of choice beyond the original expression. Gentleman Jack is twice mellowed for a softer style, while Single Barrel releases are drawn from individual casks for more depth, spice and oak character. The Bonded Series, including Jack Daniel’s Bonded, Triple Mash and Bonded Rye, offers a stronger 100 proof style, while Tennessee Rye brings a spicier side to the Lynchburg distillery.
Jack Daniel’s also produces popular flavoured expressions such as Tennessee Honey, Tennessee Fire and Tennessee Apple, alongside collectible and limited releases including Sinatra Select, Barrel Proof bottlings and age-stated whiskeys such as the 10, 12 and 14 Year Old releases. With classic bottles for mixing, smoother styles for easy sipping and bolder releases for whiskey enthusiasts, Jack Daniel’s remains one of the most important and versatile names in American whiskey.
