Founded in 1824 by George Smith, The Glenlivet is one of the most important names in Scotch whisky. Set in a quiet valley in Speyside, it helped shape the smooth, fruity style that the region is now famous for. After the Excise Act of 1823 made legal distilling possible, George Smith became one of the first to take out a licence. It was a bold decision at the time, as illegal stills were common across the Highlands, and his determination to produce whisky properly laid the foundations for the distillery’s long-standing reputation.
By the late 19th century, The Glenlivet’s whisky was so highly regarded that other distilleries began adding “Glenlivet” to their own names in an attempt to benefit from its success. Following legal disputes, it secured the exclusive right to call itself “The Glenlivet”, reinforcing its position as the original from the Livet Valley. Today it remains one of the world’s best-known single malts, combining traditional methods with the consistency expected from a global brand.
The style is classic Speyside - elegant, balanced and approachable. Expect notes of orchard fruit, citrus and honey, with soft vanilla sweetness from maturation in American oak casks, and occasional richer spice from European oak. The distillery draws its water from Josie’s Well, a mineral-rich spring in the valley, contributing to the clean, refined character of the spirit. From its remote beginnings to its international success, The Glenlivet continues to represent quality, heritage and the enduring appeal of single malt Scotch whisky.
