Nikka Yoichi
(Yo-echee)
The second distillery to be opened for pure whisky distillation after Yamazaki(in 1923) and founded in 1934 by one of the fathers of the Japanese whisky industry Masataka Taketsuru who left the Suntory/Yamazaki company to set up his own distillery in the most northern and remote part of Japan, Hokkaido which is much like Scotland most of the year in terms of climate and is closer to Russia than the mainland of Japan. Often regarded as Japan’ most traditional distillery and one of the last distilleries in the world that still have coal fired stills which lend the whisky a richer and smokier style and different peat levels are also used at Yoichi and form the base for the award winning Taketsuru blended malts and Nikka blends as well as the single malts.
