William Grant founded the Balvenie distillery in 1892 and named it after Balvenie Castle. William Grant also built the Glenfiddich distillery next door! The distillery has its own farm and some of the barley that is grown there is used at the distillery.
Balvenie is also one of the few distilleries which has kept its traditional floor maltings and the germinating grain is still turned by hand using wooden shiels. It truly is a family run distillery. The Balvenie distillery has lovely Victorian buildings which have maintained their looks and charm for a century. Even though Balvenie and Glenfiddich share the same water supply the whiskies they make are very different, and this is down to the type of casks they use. Balvenie uses European sherry oak casks and they have their own coopers to maintain the casks. Balvenie has a visitor centre and pre-booking is advised.
