North British

Established in 1885 and builtin opposition to DCL’s grain whisky monopoly (a consortium of 6 grain distilleries who sought to divide up the grain market share between them and control prices and production). Ironically now part owned by the very company it was built to oppose.   North British distillery was built in the Gorgie district of Edinburgh near the rail lines and Union Canal, and with ample room for expansion, which was quickly needed –  four years after its construction in 1887 the site’s original capacity was doubled to six million proof gallons. Whisky from North British appears in a few famous blends such as Johnnie Walker Black Label, J&B Rare, The Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark.  In 2018, the only official bottling of single grain was released.
