Monkey Shoulder was a blend of Whiskies from William Grant's three Speyside distilleries: Balvenie, Glenfiddich and Kininvie. However, now the recipe is a closely guarded secret. Described as small batches of "different" Speyside Single Malts expertly blended and married together.
The name itself has an interesting history. In the traditional Whisky making process, the barley would be turned by hand by men using large heavy malt shovels. This resulted in a common strain injury which would cause the worker's arms to hang down looking like a monkey's, hence the nickname "monkey shoulder". Thankfully, this is no longer the case, but the name lives on as a nod to the historical Whisky making process.
