The 2009 distillation vintage of The Chateau Cissac finished Benromach limited release.
Aged in first fill Bourbon casks and finished for 25 months in the illustrious red wine casks from the Haut-Medoc AOC of Bordeaux, France.
Only 4200 bottles released and bottled in 2017.
Nose: Watermelon, pomegranate, red apple skins with distinctive earthy smoke and new leather. Blood orange, bitter chocolate, floral/rose petal notes, kumquat, glace cherry, smoked ham, griddled pineapple.
Palate: Crunchy cranberry, pomegranate, black peppercorn spice, dry and earthy body, leather, pink grapefruit, charred orange rind, chocolate bitters, damsons in spiced/aromatic stock syrup (hint of clove and nutmeg) red wine tannins and pink lemonade.
Finish: Peppery watermelon, crunchy wine tannins, cranberry, lingering smoke, honey baked ham, dark chocolate, waxy blood orange, touch of fresh mint and blackcurrant leaf.
A masterclass in how to do a cask finish, very much still retaining the Benromach distillery character but adding extra layers of complexity from the red wine casks, superbly balanced and great value for money.
