Whisky By Age - 16 to 21 Year Old Whiskies
Unlike their younger counterparts, Whisky that has been aged between 16 and 21 years has a more mellow, less harsh effect on the palate. Around these age statements, you will find expressions with depth and character of older Whiskies that haven’t lost the youthful vigour of younger bottles, making these age statements very appealing, with some experts suggesting that the peak of a Whisky’s age is around 20 years old. Examples of popular Whiskies in this age bracket include Laguvalin 16 Year Old, Talisker 18 Year Old and Glenfiddich 21 Year Old.

16 Year Old Whisky
Whiskies with a 16 year age statement have had time to develop a level of complexity which is often missing in their younger counterparts. Some of our most in-demand 16 year old whiskies include:
Bushmills 16 Year Old is matured in bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry casks for at least 16 years, then re-casked after blending into port pipes for six to nine months. The whisky has a dark reddish colour, and flavours of praline, honey and roasted almond.
The signature single malt from this lovely gentle Speyside distillery. Solely matured in ex-Bourbon casks, this is a soft, fruity and layered dram which showcases a beautifull balance between malt and oak.

18 Year Old Whisky
Whiskies turning 18 truly do come of age as, by this stage, the barrel will have imbued them with a great deal of character and intricacy. However, this does not come at the expense of their youthful exuberance. Here are some of our most sought-after 18 year old whiskies:
An exceptional unpeated Islay whisky, which has a delicate sherried character. A rich mahogany Single Malt Scotch Whisky, this is one of the Bunnahabhain family favourites. It is intensely warming; with dried fruit, sherry, toffee and spices leading to a delicious honeyed nuttiness and the slightest hint of sea salt.
Talisker 18 year old is an award-winning whisky that is rich and soft but still assertive. Named the Best Single Malt Whisky in the World 2007 at the World Whiskies Awards, Talisker 18 Year Old is a Single Malt masterpiece. On the nose, rich and fruity Victoria plums, greengages, perhaps dried orange peel with some butterscotch or rum toffee and a thread of smoke behind. Its palate is sweet in front, then more assertive, with a whiff of smoke.
A true icon in the whisky world, the Macallan Sherry Oak 18 Years Old forms part of their Sherry Oak range which features a series of single malt whiskies matured exclusively in hand-picked sherry seasoned oak casks from Jerez for richness and complexity. A full bodied palate of mature oak, ginger and raisin flavours is complimented by a light mahogany natural colour.
The Springbank 18 is one of the most consistently excellent releases from this Campbeltown distillery. This 18-year-old is full of authority and is truly a classic, full-bodied dram. With a delicious nose, this whisky will tempt you in and hold your attention as you uncover its unique palate and finish.
A Highland Single Malt Distillery that is producing some superb value for money releases and the quality is getting better and better. This annual batch release is sweet and spicy with notes of barley sugar, gingerbread and a dry, warming finish.
21 Year Old Whisky
Maturing for 21 years in a cask permeates whiskies with considerable complexity, producing darker and more intense expressions. Some of our favourite 21 year old whiskies include:
Matured in a combination of the finest Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks for a minimum of 21 years, the ‘Parliament’ continues the great GlenDronach tradition of offering fruit-laden intensity in its single malts. This rich expression has been named ‘Parliament’ after the colony, or ‘parliament’, of rooks that have been nesting in the trees that overlook the GlenDronach distillery for almost 200 years.
The very pinnacle of Irish whiskey, Bushmills Single Malt Whiskey 21 year old is aged for a minimum of 19 years in former Oloroso Sherry and bourbon-seasoned casks, then married and transferred into Madeira casks for a further 2 years of aging and maturation. Awarded ‘Best Irish Single Malt 2013’ and a rare 96 points from Wine Advocate, it has huge depth that interweaves dried fruit flavours with spicy, aromatic maltiness, subtle nutty raisin notes, and a rich finish that seemingly never ends.
One of the big guns from Glengoyne. This 21 Year Old is 100% matured in Oloroso sherry casks and provides a subtle but intense nose of sultanas, dried fruit, hazelnut and baked apple. A velvety smooth palate is complimented by more dried fruit flavour and plenty of spices, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. An alluring and lengthy finish, this is a celebratory and special occasion whisky.
An exclusive 21 Year old Single Malt from the aged vintage series, bottled at 46.7% ABV. Matured in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels before being refined in ex-peated malt casks. Sweet and smoky from 21 long years of maturation first in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels and further finessed with a spicy character from hand-selected virgin American white oak casks.
Matured in the finest hand-selected first-fill oak casks, Benromach's 21 Year Old Single Malt is a beautiful dark amber expression which delivers sweet Sherry aromas. Subtle spice, Seville orange and raspberry follow with a soft smoky finish.
