Whisky By Age - 10 to 15 Year Old Whiskies
Whisky making requires time and patience. The spirit can be distilled in a day, but the ageing process takes considerably longer. The colour, aroma, flavour, and texture of the young spirit are transformed by a period of maturation in oak casks. Some whiskies have no minimum ageing requirement, but many countries, including Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and Japan, specify at least three years. Most whiskies are aged for longer, possibly even for decades. Extended maturation further develops the flavour, aroma, and character of the whisky as it ages. Although young whiskies can be superb, a double digit age statement provides reassurance that the whisky has been properly aged to maturity.

This iconic single malt is widely regarded as one of the world's finest whiskies. This heavily peated dram envelops the taster in a cloud of dense bonfire smoke, before clearing to reveal glorious sweetness, vibrant citrus fruits, and a complex array of coastal and savoury aromas and flavours.
Founded in 1995, the Lochranza distillery on the Isle Of Arran have established an enviable reputation for their outstanding single malt whiskies. The multi award winning 10 Year Old Arran showcases the rich, sweet, fruity aromas and flavours that are characteristic of whiskies from this exceptional Island distillery.
Glenmorangie is one of the best selling single malts in the world, and the most popular in Scotland. Glenmorangie's still are the tallest in Scotland, producing an elegant style of whisky that is sweet, fruity, and floral in character. The 10 Year Old offers creamy vanilla, sweet almond, and fresh citrus.
Glengoyne sits right on the Highland / Lowland divide. Their distillations are the slowest in Scotland, producing whiskies that are unpeated, soft, smooth, and approachable. The 10 Year Old is light and delicate with flavours of toffee, apple, and nuts.
Springbank is considered by many to be the ultimate cult distillery. Their 10 Year Old single malt is perfectly balanced from the first sip through to the full, rich finish. Moderately peated with flavours and aromas of sweet vanilla, orchard fruits, exotic spices, sea salt, and smoky bonfire.
12 Year Old Whisky
Once whiskies hit the 12 year mark, they will have developed intricacy, nuance, and depth of flavour that is rarely found in young whiskies. Here is a selection of our the best selling 12 Year Old whiskies:
Macallan is the ultimate luxury Scotch whisky brand. This 12 Year Old single malt is a true classic that showcases the influence of high quality ex-Sherry casks on Macallan's famously rich and decadent spirit, distilled in their curiously small copper pot stills.
Yamazaki is Japan's oldest distillery, and perhaps its most highly regarded. Matured in a combination of Japanese oak, ex-Bourbon and Sherry oak casks to produce a sweet and delicate single malt oozing with peach, pineapple and grapefruit with subtle vanilla spice and fragrant oak.
Glenmorangie pioneered the practice of wood finishing, or double maturation. The Lasanta, was matured in ex-Bourbon casks, before being transferred to ex-Sherry barrels for up to two years, adding new layers of aroma and flavour. This whisky is rich and full bodied with notes of raisin, toffee, and spice.
The famous Scottish Island of Islay is best known for its heavily peated single malt whiskies. However, the majority of whisky produced at Bunnahabhain is unpeated. Double matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks, this popular single malt whisky is fresh, fruity, coastal, and vibrant.
Located in the Scottish Highlands, Tomatin distillery was once the largest malt whisky distillery in Scotland. Their whiskies are typically rich, sweet, and generously fruity. The 12 Year Old has been matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks, and is an excellent introduction to their range.
15 Year Old Whisky
Fifteen years is a considerable period of maturation for any whisky. Whiskies of this age have had plenty of time to develop rich and complex layers of aroma and flavour. However, they rarely carry the premium price tag attached to their older counterparts. Here is a selection of our favourite 15 Year Old whiskies:
Dalmore is the jewel in the crown of the Whyte & Mackay whisky portfolio. One of the most recognisable luxury whisky brands in the world, each bottle is adorned with a distinctive silver stag. The Sherry cask matured 15 Year Old is smooth, rich, fruity, and full bodied – the epitome of the Dalmore house style.
A deliciously rich, dark fruited Campbeltown single salt that has been matured in ex-Sherry casks. Springbank 15 Year Old has flavours of toffee, chocolate, nuts and spice. Silky and complex, the sweet and fruity flavours are balanced by smoke, spice and maritime notes.
Bowmore is the oldest distillery on Islay, and one of the oldest in all of Scotland. Bowmore single malt is made using peated barley, giving the whisky its characteristic smoky character. The 15 Year Old has been matured primarily in ex-Sherry casks that impart rich dried fruit flavours and sweet spice.
Located in the far north of Scotland, Old Pulteney single malt is typically rich, fruity, and malty, with characteristic notes of sea breeze and brine, said to result from the distillery’s coastal location. The 15 Year Old has attractive flavours of orchard fruits, honey and citrus with some darker notes of chocolate, raisin, and spice.
One of our favourite whiskies of 2015, this limited release has proved to be extremely popular with our discerning customers. Produced at Scotland’s most Easterly distillery, this bold and punchy single malt was matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks, and bottled at cask strength.
