The Glenrothes distillery is located on the banks of the peaty burn of Rothes. The distillery uses water from the Ardcanny Spring, which the locals call “The Lady’s Well”. Glenrothes first opened in 1879 and was then extended in 1896. Unfortunately in 1922 there was a large fire in the distillery and lots of casks exploded which caused huge quantities of whisky to drain into a local burn. It was then underwent a complete modernization in 1980 and now produces around 1.6 million litres a year.
Every bottle of Glenrothes has the year of bottling and date of distillation. Glenrothes have a very unique bottling that resembles the style of sample bottles found in blending rooms. Most of the whisky produced at Glenrothes is used for the Cutty Sark Scots blend.
