Laphroaig is another classic Islay distillery which was built by Donald and Alex Johnston in 1815 on the southern coast of Islay. The distillery has beautiful white-washed granite walls and black window frames and has the name Laphroaig displayed in large letters. Laphroaig is extremely peaty and it gets this taste from the peat fires they use to smoke the barley. Like Lagavulin the barrels are left to mature in sheds on the beach. This gives Laphroaig its salty and medicinal taste.
It is one of those whiskies that you will either love or hate. It is loved by the Prince of Wales, and he even commissioned his own “Highgrove” edition. There is a variety of different aged whisky available from Laphroaig ranging from 10 – 30 years along with some special editions available. Laphroaig distillery also has a fantastic visitor centre which is open all year.
